FEAR Project: S.A.N.E.

FEAR: Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (S.A.N.E.) from timmatsui.com.

It took one year to build a relationship with the Harborview Center for Sexual Assault and Traumatic Stress (HCSATS), an additional eight months of contract negotiation with the community relations department, until I received authorization for six hours of access to the Harborview Emergency Department.

The purpose of this piece, which was meant to be longer, was to educate people about what happens when someone reports to the ER and said “I’ve been raped.” Harborview is one of the few hospitals in the region offering a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (S.A.N.E.) program, meaning patients will receive a forensic exam that can be used in court, if they choose to press charges, accompanied by medical care and a launching point for victim aftercare services.

What I didn’t expect was to meet Nurse McKinnel.

The relationship I built with HCSATS lasts today as I continue to speak at SANE nurse training and community education forums.
