I’d heard that Stone Gardens, one of two climbing gyms in Seattle, needed some photos for their promotional material. I approached them and ended up spending a day working with them.
We were fortunate to have a bright day which, combined with the gym’s north-facing windows, created good lighting conditions. Having the Canon 5D Mark II with its high resolution and impressive low-light capabilities definitely helped as I’d chosen to keep it simple and use only minimal lighting. (As a side note, it’s increasingly popular for modern-day bouldering and sport climbing photographers to use strobes to shape their light and increase the drama).
The models were chosen by Stone Gardens and were either gym employees, on the junior team, or regulars; all were hardworking and enthusiastic as they did move after move. They were great at keeping the shoot productive and fun.
We did this shoot a few months ago. I’ve already filed the images away, but I thought I’d share some samples:
